Still getting new start for the new year

Tags: , , ,

I certainly noticed that I have started taking vitamins, at least until they wore off last night and then in minutes I went from focused and alert to wanting to crawl into bed and sleep for hours.

That is a good thing, though. Rather than feeling tired and unfocused all day, I was awake and fairly focused for most of the day after the vitamins kicked in. And I slept good. Did not wake up until 9am, but that is an improvement. For a couple days before that I was waking at 6am, but before that it was sleep until after noon.

Alix has gone home and our house can go back to some level of normality again! [For those of you who don't know any of the story, Alix is a 17yo narcissist who ran off to, and actually enjoys living on the street with fellow homeless wannabes. The story is soooo complex. If you REALLY want to know more, just click on the "Alix" tag at the bottom of the post] She hasn’t changed at all. If anything she’s worse [I didn't think that'd be possible] My darling prodigal daughter who i don’t see anything “healthy” in anymore, left a trail of emotional destruction before leaving.

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness: Part VI

Tags: , , , ,

We’re wrapping up the six-part series on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness this week and one last time I would like to give a big shout-out to The Fitness Nerd for researching this topic so thoroughly.

If you haven’t been following the entire series, I hope you’ll take the time to revisit the previous postings on DOMS via the following links: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V. It truly is a worthwhile read.

Can I Still Workout With Sore Muscles?

While allowing your muscles time to rest and recover after training is critical, there appears to be very little evidence that workout out when your muscles are still sore will cause additional damage or impede strength or muscle gains.

In fact, many people report anecdotal improvements in symptoms of DOMS after performing additional bouts of exercise in subsequent days.

What You Should Know About Dietary Supplement News Reporting

By Neil E. Levin, CCN, DANLA

Are male smokers taking beta-carotene really at increased risk of cancer? Are high dosages of Vitamin E really hazardous to your ? Is ephedra, an herb with demonstrated weight loss benefits, really a “killer” that merits its banned status by the U.S. and Drug Administration?

Natural remedies have a long history of promoting and wellness, dating back thousands of years. But sloppy science and sensationalist reporting by the news media make this increasingly hard to believe.

Detoxification

By Neil E. Levin, CCN, DANLA

The EPA tracks about 650 toxic chemicals used in 23,600 facilities in the US. The agency reports that about half of the 4.24 billion pounds of these toxic chemicals are annually released into the air, ground or water. These include chemicals from the mining, smelting and power generation industries, paper production, electronic equipment manufacturing, plastics, pesticides, etc. While the highest release of chemicals is associated with mining and power production, other industries release problematic chemicals into the environment on a daily basis, all over our country.

Certain groups are most at risk (e.g., children, pregnant and nursing women, the elderly).

Beta-carotene risks still unproven!

Tags: , ,

A recent journal article pointed out the widely-reported danger of smokers using beta-carotene, a natural source (provitamin) of vitamin A, as part of their multivitamins. 1 In this meta-analysis (as in common in such analyses) the researchers have neglected to consider pre-existing dietary and serum levels of this nutrient, making their claim to control by placebo inadequate to properly isolate this variable. In fact, this failure to determine the effects of beta-carotene at a dose-dependent plasma level – and by neglecting to measure total beta-carotene intake along with the relevant synergistic antioxidants associated with it, as opposed to simply measuring supplemental intake - raises serious questions about the validity of these results.

Myths about stearate "risks"

Tags: , , , , ,

There are some common myths about stearates. Please allow me to describe the stearates that are utilized in making nutritional supplements, and how they are used, and other pertinent information on their safety and use in dietary supplements and foods.

Stearic acid is converted into oleic acid in vivo, so becomes a similar as is found in olive oil. In fact, one jumbo olive is estimated to contain 13 milligrams (.013 g) of stearic acid (C 18:0), many times more than is used in any pills or capsules.

Diabetes: Learn How Different Foods Affect Your Blood Sugars

Tags: ,

Clients with diabetes frequently ask me “Will such and such a make my blood sugar go up?”. My answer is most always, “Test your blood sugar to find out how different foods affect your particular body”. One of the corner stones to taking care of diabetes is monitoring blood sugars on a regular basis. Different foods react differently in everyones body due to a variety of factors such as weight, age, activity level, medications, etc.

If you want to see if and how much a particular affects your blood sugar, check your blood sugar BEFORE you eat the (so you have a baseline blood sugar) and then check your blood sugar one or two hours after eating.

More on Jennie-O…

I have already posted once about Jennie-O’s turkey bacon (Please see post 11/15/07.). But, I was recently on their website again looking at other products and was impressed once again. Their turkey burgers and sausages are pretty lean. Their burgers and sausages are reasonable low in and very low in saturated when comparing to pork sausage (A typical pork sausage can have up to an average of 30 grams of total and 10 grams of saturated per link.). Jennie-O’s turkey sausage has just 10 grams of total and 3 grams of saturated per link.
